Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.
William Edward Laverty (Bill), age 72, died December 18, 2023, in Vero Beach, Florida. He died of natural causes after being diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia several years ago. He was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Before moving to Florida to be closer to family, Bill lived in Brooklyn, New York, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Manhattan, New York and White Plains, NY.
He is survived by his children, Max and Hannah, his wife of 43 years, Paula, and his brother, Peter Laverty. He was predeceased by his parents, William J. Laverty (2000) and Margaret Laverty (2012), and his brother Paul Laverty (1992).
Bill graduated Summa Cum Laude from Villanova University in 1973 where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and an integral member of the Villanova lacrosse team, playing goalie and midfield positions. He received his MBA from Boston College in 1976.
Bill spent most of his life living and working in New York City as a Bond Underwriter for a veritable “who’s who” of Wall Street firms from 1973 through 2021. He retired from Academy Securities in 2021. As a municipal bond underwriter, Bill worked hand in hand with dozens of municipalities with the financing of everything from power plants to sports complexes. Notable among the many deals are the original and current Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ, and the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.
Bill was active and energetic and relished his time with family and friends. He loved hiking, kayaking, and bird watching but was happiest when skiing a challenging trail at Vail or Park City. He loved spending time at the family camp near Moosehead Lake in Maine, which, with no cell phone service, electricity, or running water was always a point of pride for Bill. His commitment to Boston sports teams was legendary. He refused to allow his children to become Yankee fans, and until his last days would still scoff at anyone wearing a Yankee cap. He accurately predicted, in 2000, that the Red Sox would win the World Series in 2004.
Bill’s greatest passion was his involvement in his children’s sports activities. He rarely missed a game, even when they were away at boarding school or college. Always active and energetic on the sidelines, Bill managed to be red-carded by the referees during at least three soccer games. He was loved by all of Max and Hannah’s teammates as the “Dad with the blue cooler” full of Gatorade from middle school through college athletics.
Bill’s favorite restaurant was Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan, NY. As a great way to toast his memory, raise a glass of good Pinot Noir with your steak at Sparks!

Ftom all our years of trading, being editors of the bond crier to our Yankee-red Sox rivalry life was so exhilarating. A few laughs as well. My deepest condolences, loved him. I was fortunate to call Bill a dear friend for over 40 years. We first met in Brooklyn Heights and our relationship continued in Maine where he loved to go to the dump and LLBean first and foremost!!! Bill supported me and my children through some challenging times, and one of my favorite memories is of Bill whipping off his Red Sox belt at Max’s wedding during the best man’s (who just happened to be my son, John) toast. We drank a lot of really good wine together, and our families celebrated New Year’s Eve together for many years. The last few years were very challenging for Bill and his family, and I have confidence that Bill is at peace today. I love you, Bill.

So very sorry for your loss. We were roommates for 2 years at P-570, Devon-Strafford Apts where Bill was famous for organizing the best parties at Villanova. More importantly, he kept a watchful eye over me to ensure that somehow I made it to dental school. He attended my son’s Bar Mitzvah in Colorado Springs where I can still see him with a big smile as he organized the carrying around of my son in the “chair” ceremony. He will be missed and I’m hoping you are all remembering the wonderful times that he gave you all.

Dear Paula, Max, Hannah and Family, I am very sorry to hear of Billy’s passing, in my mind he will always be the guy with the bow tie from Dillon Read. That is when I first met him, as I was a broker at Chapdelaine, and he worked with the best people, Marguerite Farley, Damon Smith and Howie Burstein…just to name a few. We became friends and I realized he lived across the street from me in the Heights, on Monroe Place. Billy was always in a good mood, especially when he was sharing news about his family and the latest accomplishments on the squash court. He was a great dancer, I remember a Toppers party downtown at the Ukrainian club and he was tearing up the dance floor! Always a gentleman, always a professional and always a good friend, he will be truly missed by all of his friends and colleagues who remember all of the memorable times we shared together in the Municipal Bond Business. His spirit will live on in all of you and in all of the stories we all share. With my deepest sympathy , Pamela Dower
