The Lowther family has been in funeral service for three generations. Our family history began in Indian River County in the 1950s. Joseph D. Lowther, Sr., Thomas’ father, worked in the funeral industry locally and went on to own and operate funeral homes in Ormond Beach and Holly Hill, Florida, area.
Lowther Cremation Service, Inc., located at 1555 27th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960 opened for business in August 1997. In 2001, we expanded to include our full-service funeral home on the adjoining property, Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 1655 27th St., Vero Beach, FL 32960, offering funeral service and cremation options.
We are proud to serve Indian River County residents both locally and throughout the United States.
Beverly Howerton and Thomas Lowther married in 1981 and have two children, Kari and Ryan. In 2006, Kari R. Lowther was a welcome addition to our family business. Funeral Directors, Ryan S. Lowther and Saranne Sisk, joined our staff in 2013, with Saranne becoming Saranne S. Lowther, Ryan’s wife, in August 2014. We are proud to have our dually certified Licensed Funeral Director and Martin County Firefighter Paramedic, Timothy D. Myers also on staff. Jeff Gibbs was warmly welcomed into our family in 2021, as a Licensed Funeral Director. Our nights and weekends are supported by husband and wife team, Michael and Dadra Smith, who have been serving families with us for 15 plus years.

He is a 4th generation Indian River County resident. Tom is a graduate of Vero Beach High School, Class of 1978. In 1981, he graduated from Miami Dade School of Mortuary Science. Tom is active in many civic organizations, including Sunrise Rotary Club Past President, Vero Masonic Lodge, Azan Shrine Club, and the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. Tom is passionate about serving his community, and in 2002 was elected to the Indian River County Board of County Commissioners, serving as Chairman 2005-2006. In support of Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition, Tom participated in “Dancing with the Vero Stars 2015”. Tom was elected in 2014 and currently serves as a Commissioner to the Indian River County Mosquito Control District and as Chairman 2020-2021.
She was a graduate of Vero Beach High School Class of 1978 and Indian River Community College, Fort Pierce, FL, earning an Associates Arts Degree. Beverly attended Lynn University, Boca Raton, FL, earning her Licensed Direct Disposer accreditation.
She was born in Vero Beach and is a graduate of Vero Beach High School, Class of 2004. She received her CNA certification training from Indian River Community College and went on to work in several of our local nursing homes. Kari joined the family business in 2006. She has a son, Gavin and daughter, Kinsley.
He was born in Vero Beach and is a 2007 graduate of Vero Beach High School. He attended Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice with a Minor in Business. Upon graduation, Ryan enrolled in the Associate of Science Degree program at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Decatur (Atlanta), GA, completing his studies in August of 2013. Ryan is a third-generation funeral director; his paternal grandfather, a former graduate of the Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones College of Mortuary Science, Dallas, Texas and his father, a graduate of Miami Dade College of Mortuary Science. He is a member of Sunrise Rotary, Vero Beach and The Hundred Club of Indian River County, Inc.
She was born in Athens, Georgia and was a 2009 graduate of Franklin County High School, Carnesville, GA. She attended North Georgia College & State University, Dahlonega, GA, studying Nursing with a focus in Gerontology and is a Phi Mu Alumni. Saranne enrolled in the Associate of Science Degree program at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Decatur (Atlanta), GA and completed her studies in August of 2013. She and her husband, Ryan, have a son, Slaton Selby, daughter, Ryanne Kennedy and two Yorkies, Nala Jean and Tini.
Tim is a 35-year resident of Vero Beach. He moved with his family in 1985 to Vero Beach, from Indiana. He graduated Vero Beach High School in 1994. Tim attended St. Petersburg College, where he graduated with honors in May of 2000 as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. After completing his internship, he returned to Vero Beach and began working with Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home in April of 2001. In 2003, Tim pursued a second career with the Fire Service. In January of 2005, he was hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic with Martin County Fire Rescue and in May of 2005 he graduated with an A.S. Degree in Emergency Medical Services from Indian River State College. In 2020, he was promoted to the position of Captain. He returned to Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home in 2019 as a Funeral Director and Embalmer, on a part time basis. Tim married his high school sweetheart, Courtney, in February of 2004. Together they have two sons, Brayden and Griffin.
Jeff was born and raised in a small rural town in Maryland. As a child Jeff grew up working on a farm learning the ways of the land and the value of life. In 2002, he attended Florida State University and received his degree in Criminology. After college, Jeff went into public service and became a State Correctional Officer shortly thereafter he followed his childhood dream and became a Law Enforcement Officer. In 2015, Jeff began his funeral career. During that time he returned to school and graduated from the St. Petersburg College with his degree in Mortuary Science. He is an avid hunter and single father of his two children, Alexandra and Daniel. Jeff has been part of the Lowther family since June 2021.
He was born in Vero Beach and graduated from VBHS, class of 1983. He graduated from Florida Christian College in 1990 with a degree in Christian Education. Mike has worked with the Lowther family for over 15 years. Mike fits right in with his strong work ethic and love of family. Mike has been married to Dadra for 33+ years and together they have 4 grown children, 3 daughters in love and 3 grandchildren. Mike sees his position at Lowther as a ministry and often Dadra accompanies Mike on calls. Mike & Dadra love being part of a family owned company. When Mike isn’t working he can be found either running, riding his bicycle or spending time with family.
Bill works for the Lowther Family as an attendant, starting in January 2024. Bill retired as Chaplain for Acts retirement life Communities after 21 years of service. Before that, Bill pastored three in Ohio and one in Massachusetts.
Bill graduated from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton, Ma. in 2002 with a Master of Divinity. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2007 with a Master of Business Administration, and from Light University in 2012 with a Master of Counseling and Crisis care. Bill is also a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in the State of Florida.
Bill has been married for 48 years to his wife, Karen who together have one son who works for the government at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. They have five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren as well as three great-grandchildren.
The Meads love Florida and even though they are retired from their full-time jobs, they plan to make Florida their lifelong place of residency.
