Joan Antos (formerly Carter, born Ashbery), of Vero Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on Monday, August 26, 2024, at the age of 87.

Joan was born in Buffalo, New York. The family relocated to Central New York during Joan’s early life, eventually settling in the village of Baldwinsville.

After graduating high school from Baldwinsville Central Schools, Joan worked at Carrier Corporation, where, among other accomplishments, she became the company’s fourth Certified Professional Secretary in 1965. Joan pursued higher education at Syracuse University, earning both her undergraduate degree and a master’s in education. She was an avid reader throughout her life, relishing mysteries and good storytelling. She also enjoyed the theater, piano, golf, and travel.

Joan was a gifted teacher and communicator, as demonstrated by her long and distinguished career in education. Joan dedicated over two decades to teaching at Westhill Central Schools, where she made a significant impact as a business educator and advisor to the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). After retiring from Westhill, Joan continued her passion for workforce development, notably consulting for Syracuse University’s WorkKeys program.

In 2001, Joan and her husband, Ted, moved to Miami, Florida, where they remained until relocating to Vero Beach, Florida, in 2020. Together, they built a network of cherished friends and, for many years, spent winters in the Florida sunshine and summers back “home” in Central New York.

Joan is survived by Ted, her husband of 44 years; daughter Susan Carter (Steven Yohe); sister Helen Mezynski (Ben); nephew Father David Mezynski, PhD; niece Jennifer Nagel (Bart); grand-niece Jana Nagel; and cousin Merita Ashbery.

A memorial service and burial will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Grace Episcopal Church in Baldwinsville, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Grace Episcopal Church Memorial Fund (110 Oswego Street, Baldwinsville NY 13027) or the Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.
