Walter Charles Smith, 89, of Vero Beach, Florida and formerly of Galesburg, Illinois passed away on October 13, 2024.
Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rennie Smith. He is also survived by his daughter, Sheri Stukel (David) of Vero Beach, Florida, and his son, Marshal Smith of East Moline, Illinois. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Clare Stukel, Walter Stukel, Evan Smith and Brooke Smith.
Walter never did anything halfway and the life he lived showed it. His business acumen and creativity was unrivaled. He founded WaterWorks Carwashes in Galesburg, Illinois, and built 36 carwashes in all. In his free time, Walter flew planes, explored by boat and drove around in cars (a lot).
His gruff (Marine-based) exterior could be initially intimidating but those who took a moment to look deeper found a truly generous, funny, loving, and sentimental man. He will be incredibly missed.
A small, family memorial service has been planned.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.
