John Alden Downs, age 97, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 30, 2017.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and has been living in Vero Beach since 1950.
Mr. Downs was a United States Navy veteran of WWII.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Mr. Downs was a graduate of both Denison University and Florida Atlantic University, earning a master’s degree.
He had been a teacher at both the Freshman Learning Center and Gifford Middle School; later retiring as director of purchasing for IRC schools.
Mr. Downs enjoyed his time spent as a WTTB radio sports announcer of the local football games; also announcing the baseball games at Michael Field.
He was instrumental in the formation of the IRC Volunteer Ambulance Squad.
Survivors include his son, Dennis Alden Downs; daughter, Donna Downs Scott; 4 granddaughters; 9 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Mr. Downs was predeceased by his wife, Betty Downs.

I apologize for my remarks being so late. If I was ever fortunate enough to meet him I was too small to remember it. My father was Don Mathews Downs, John’s younger brother. From his obituary it sounds like his was a life well lived. My sincere condolences to the family.
