Steven Matthew Johnson, age 72, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2026, at home in Vero Beach, Florida surrounded by loving family and friends.
He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in the Summer of 1954. Steven moved from Kingston and Scituate, Massachusetts before making his home in Vero Beach, Florida.
Steven attended and graduated from Quincy High School.
He was a United States Navy Veteran and proudly served from December 1972 – June 1979. He was an interior communications electrician second class and received the Navy Good Conduct Service Medal & the National Defense Service Ribbon.
Steven retired from the Quincy Massachusetts Fire Department (July 1979 – July 2024). During his tenure he was assigned to Engine 1 out of Headquarter, Deputy Chiefs Aid, and Engine 7 out of Squantum.
The word Unity. It means a condition of harmony. Steve would walk into a store introduce himself to the clerk and state “The word of the day is unity lets spread the word”. He would then proceed to have a lengthy conversation with that person to the point they could be considered friends. That’s who Steve was a friend of many. Having the gift of gab and being able to chat with anyone. He was a true craftsman.
He worked in construction on the side for years but his true attention to detail showed in his home projects. Tile jobs, cabinetry, and stair building. Building he enjoyed teaching or showing off his skills to others. Some would say, “he’s a perfectionist”. Everything had to be down to the exact measurement to meet his standards. He was a true car enthusiast. He had a special place in his heart for his 67 corvettes and his Honda convertible. With either the vettes windows down or the Hondas top down he loved the occasional “flooring it” and ripping through the gears, to slow down and say to himself, “I love these car”. Like many others he loved sports and especially the Boston sports teams.
Although he always had a love for college football games on Saturdays, with multiple TVs set up to watch multiple games he was known to make a bet or two here and there with friends, always making sure to cover the spread. He loved collecting things. His collections changed and grew over the years. Collecting things like hockey cards, coins, and rare currency. Kinck knacks and most recently Pokémon cards. Whether it was to complete the full set or just to have because he liked it, he was always looking at that old laptop for a deal. Then there was music. Some considered him a hippie. He loved hits of the 60s, classic rock of the 70s, and even surprised some with an occasional band that was way out of the norm. With Sirius radio always on to having a teenager’s dream audio system installed in his car. Music was a huge part of his life. One sticker he had read “If it’s too loud, you’re too old”. He always laughed at that one.
Lastly, he was a family man. There wasn’t a day that he didn’t share his love and devotion to his wife Janice, his children, and their families. He was a man that devoted his life to helping others. You could always count on him to help at a time of need of need. Easygoing, fun, adventurous, trusting, loving, mentor, comical are just some of his many qualities. Steve brought so much enthusiasm and love into this world. It will be greatly missed. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts forever.
Survivors include his wife Janice, sons Steven (Kelly) and Christopher (Cara), daughter Melissa, and grandchildren Tessa, Max, and Ryann.
Steven was predeceased by his parents Russell Johnson and Christine Mormino, his sister Debra Johnson, and his brother-in-law William J. Francis.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
