John F. Winther, Sr., 93 of Vero Beach, Florida died November 26, 2016 at the Atlantic Health Care Facility.

John Winther was born on June 23, 1923 in Brooklyn, N.Y. For 34 years he resided in Baldwin, New York and was a resident of Vero Beach since moving from Baldwin in 1985.

He was honorably discharged from the Army after W.W.II, serving in the 15th Army Air Corps in Italy and Africa.

John was an award winning and outstanding Salesman for Rheingold Breweries, Inc. in Brooklyn N.Y. for 27 years. He was a member of the Office and Professional Employees International Union #153.

At the age of 55 he began working for the Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage, N.Y. He worked in Warehousing and Security until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baldwin from 1954 until 1985. After moving to Florida John was an organizing charter member of Living Lord Lutheran Church, Vero Beach.

He was a member of the Vero Beach Codgers Softball League. He was an avid N.Y. Mets fan all his life and has a paver stone in his honor at the main entrance of the Citified Ballpark.

He was a former President and board member of the Tamara Gardens Condo Association of Vero Beach and was a proud member of the Baldwin Masonic Lodge #956 for most of his adult life.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth of Vero Beach, daughter, Linda Eggermann of Vero Beach, two sons, Frederick O. Winther of Huntington Station, N.Y. and John F. Winther, Jr. of Mastic Beach, N.Y. He was also a proud Grandfather and Great Grandfather of nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Laura Winther Strait and brother, Henry J. Winther.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in memory of John Winther, to Living Lord Lutheran Church, 2725 58th Ave, Vero Beach, FL 32966.
