John Nicholas Basile died on October 26, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria of 60 years; three children, Bradley Keith (Dori) Basile of Plainfield, Connecticut, Laura Cheryl Gerard of Seagrove, Florida, Robert John (Garnet) Basile of La Crescenta, California; grandson, Ian Sebastian Basile; niece, Debbie Digangi of Chicaho Illinois; nephew, William Basile of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
He was predeceased by parents, Dominic and Gilda Basile; brother, Thomas G. Basile; sister, Gloria Jean Everett.
John was born in Cliffside, New Jersey on November 9, 1925, the son of Gilda Ursoiuli Basile and Dominic Basile. He lived in Vero Beach for 27 years, after coming from North Stonington, Connecticut. He was a 1951 graduate of University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conneticut where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the United States Navy and served on the USS Gearing and USS Saturn. He was discharged from the service in 1946. His early career as an Industrial Engineer was spent with various companies including Remington Rand, Westinghouse Electric, Avco Lycoming and RCA.
In 1955, he married Gloria Gehmlich in Salem Lutheran Church, Bridgeport, Conneticut. In 1963, he joined General Dynamics Corporation and retired 25 years later as a manager of Human Resources at the Data Systems Division in Norwich, Conneticut. He was active in both charitable and community activities and clubs including Lions, Rotary, Elks and formed SCORE at Avery Point, Connecticut after retiring. He was a member of the Shennnecossett Yacht Club and spent winter in Florida and summer in North Stonington and Groton, Conneticut. He was very proud to be able to be on the Southeast Honor Flight in 2013 to Washington, DC.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 6, from 10 am-12 pm at Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St. Westerly, RI 02891. A funeral service will be held at noon in the funeral home chapel; burial will follow in River Bend Cemetery.
