Edna Mae Jackson lived 99 beautiful years. Edna passed peacefully at home on April 12, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 5, 1921 to her parents Leonard and Margaret Porter Altenbaugh. On July 24, 1943 she married Richard R. Jackson, in Chico, California, where he was serving in the Army Air Corp. They moved from Pittsburgh to Conneaut Lake, PA in 1957. In 1979, they moved to Vero Beach, Florida, returning to Conneaut Lake to spend the summer months.

In 1940, at the age of 19, she won the title of U.S. Roller Figure Skating Champion. She continued to love to skate and to follow competitions throughout her life. She loved a good party and hosting get-togethers at the family home. Edna had a great love for animals and the family was blessed to have horses and several dogs over the years. Edna and Dick loved to travel and enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada and other locations. She was an avid golfer, playing with family and friends as a regular at Oakland Beach Golf Club in Conneaut Lake. After moving to Vero Beach she continued to golf and was still seen at the Vista Plantation driving range at age 90. She enjoyed drawing and painting and created beautiful artwork well into her 90’s. She loved playing cards twice a week with her family. Edna maintained an exercise program throughout her life and has always been an inspiration to her family and friends enjoying Pilates into her 90’s. Since 2010 she lived on her own and was very self-sufficient throughout. Getting together and visiting with her family brought her great joy; she especially enjoyed the visits with all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She often remarked about how much she loved being so close to her family and was very grateful that her children were all nearby.

Edna was a housewife and wonderful mother to four children, Bob (Susan) Jackson, Nancy (Virgil) Steadman, Bonnie (Kris) Wetherell and Barbara Baker (Carl Crider) all of Vero Beach, FL. She was very proud of her three grandchildren Michael (Courtney) Jackson, Austin, TX, Luke (Amanda) Steadman, Vero Beach, FL and her favorite granddaughter Jennifer (Preston) Flannery, New Castle, PA. Edna had five great grandchildren, Nadine and Landon Jackson, Ava and Tyson Steadman and Payton Flannery. She is survived by her sister-in law Carol Martin of Sand Key, Florida.

Edna and Dick were married for 66 years before Dick passed in 2010. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her parents and her brother John (Jack) Altenbaugh.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VNA & Hospice Foundation, 920 37th Place, Suite 101, Vero Beach 32960, in her memory.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

They were a perfect couple! I had the great opportunity to be part of that family and was so glad to be one! Dick was typical male figure! Edna the typical housewife at that time! They both lived life to the fullest! They where definitely meant for each other! They where sweethearts and where blessed to have lived together as long as they did! Had and raised a beautiful family, and raised them right! They just don’t make people like that anymore! I miss them both dearly! Heart felt prayers for the family but so glad they are together again! God bless to all the family! Much love to each! Glad I can say still family!

I remember Edna Jackson first of all as a lifetime golfer. She met my mom Barbra Young and I met her third child Bonnie and my brother Colton was the same age as the baby of the family Barbie. My father Harold, and Edna’s husband Dick became part of great group of golfing guys. Lots of great times. At her farm there was a pool and a pond and lots of places to run and the adults were very well served in the home. Edna made the best sloppy Joe’s on the planet as well as bear turd cookies. Yum. Right now I am sad but just look at those memories. Soon we will all look back and smile.

Tom- Museum friend. Bonnie, very sorry to hear about your mother; you had told me she was in hospice so while not a surprise still hard to lose your mother. It leaves a gap that takes a long time to fill. I did not know that she was from Pittsburgh as is Ann Piper. It is too bad we never met. Great city in which to grow up. I will try to be less of a bother about VBMA things but can’t promise!!

Edna was my downstairs neighbor at Vista Plantation. She was a wonderful conversationalist and inspired me with her interest in art, puzzles and keeping up with the modern world. I will miss her.

Bob, Nancy, Bonnie and Barb, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all. Your mom was a kind, gentle and beautiful woman. I have so many warm memories dating back to when I was a little girl of the times at your farm. Memories of your mom making a cute joke and giving me a smile and a wink with that sparkle in her eye. She leaves a legacy with you all of her testimony and love for her family. May God bless her and all of you and her beautiful family. With much love, Joycie
