Joan Mary Elberfeld, age 89, of Vero Beach, entered into eternal rest on December 17, 2018 with complications resulting from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Joan was married on Oct 28, 1950 and celebrated 68 years of marriage to John F. “Jack” Elberfeld.

Joan dedicated her life to serving others. She was initially a stay at home mom but when her children were grown, she attended the NY School of Interior Design (BS) and helped all her friends with their home design.

They lived on Long Island and in New Jersey. They later moved to Indianapolis, IN, to be with their daughter, Beth Binkley and granddaughters, Maggie & Colleen. Later they moved to Vero Beach where they retired.

Joan started the outreach program at her church in NJ, and when a successor was able to take her place, Joan joined the Literacy Volunteers of America; where she was dedicated to providing literacy instruction for adults. For this effort, Joan was honored by the Governor of New Jersey and the local U.S. House Representative.

Joan’s leadership continued with her championing the literacy effort in the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility and Rahway State Prison.

When they moved to Indianapolis, Joan founded the outreach program at Holy Spirit Parish at Geist Catholic Church.

A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 26th, 2018 at St. Helen Catholic Church.
