Carl William Brobst passed away on August 23, 2024, at the age of 73, in his home in Vero Beach, Florida.  He battled cancer for the last year of his life with vigor and a positive disposition, living his best life to the very end playing chess and poker as much as possible.  His four sons and daughter-in-law Nicki cared for him until the end.

Carl grew up outside Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania working his mother’s farm and learning the carpentry trade from his father, which he spent over 50 years dedicated too.  He lived a good portion of his childhood with his grandparents Baur whom he loved wholeheartedly.  After high-school, Carl married and supported his family of six working in the construction business.  In 1983 he moved his family from Pennsylvania to Vero Beach to pursue building opportunities.  Many homes in Vero Beach were built or remodeled by his highly skilled hands.  Additionally, Carl was an Army Reservist from 1970 to 1976.

A 1968 graduate of Lake Lehman high school in Pennsylvania, Carl was a four-year letterman in football and was an all-district star Tackle in both his junior and senior years.  His hobbies varied throughout his life, but he was always active hunting, fishing, bottle-digging, scuba diving, metal detecting, and playing racquetball.  He loved the Pittsburgh Steelers (even before their success in the 1970s), was an avid chess player, and loved to play card games especially poker.  Carl’s character was defined by his love for his four sons, a highly competitive spirit, “dry” sense of humor, and insatiable work ethic.

Carl is preceded in death by his father Charles Brobst, mother Joan Baur, his son Nathan (deceased 1981) and his beloved dogs Sally and Leo. He is survived by his sons Carl Jr, Raymond, Adam, and Daniel, their mother Robin, and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Vero Beach Moose Lodge (226 43rd Avenue) on Saturday, September 21st, 2024 at 7:00pm. Dress attire requested is business casual.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

I just heard this unsettling news. I will miss you my friend. Fifteen years of poker had me contributing to your retirement on a weekly basis. Thanks for all the laughs, and may you find a new game in paradise. RIP Carl

Dan Culumber- Friend. I remember meeting you at Seaside Grill 15 years through your boys. We instantly became friends through poker and that was the beginning of are 25 year weekly game. We enjoyed your company and we will always remember your jokes and friendship. Rest in Peace. My condolences to Carl Jr, Adam, Ray, Daniel.

I just saw this and am heartbroken. Carl was a fantastic, talented and caring person. I had the honor of knowing him for the past 10 years. He always spoke highly of sons and sure did enjoy his poker. We are snowbirds and every time we came to Florida we made sure we saw or contacted Carl. He was one in a million and I am sure his family will miss him terribly
