Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.
Carla L. Hunter, 84, died February 26, 2022, at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla. She was born March 1, 1937, the daughter of Karl Tschersich (b. 1890) and Ilse Poppendieck (b. 1905) in Neumarkt, Detmold, Germany.
Her father became a prisoner of war, held by the Russians. Carla, her sister, and mother moved with her grandfather, who was a high court judge, to West Germany after the war. He taught her Latin and Greek classics, and her mother took her to the opera every week. So, she received a classical education, and spoke German, French, and English fluently.
In her 20s, she lived in Cape Town, SA with close friends Marion and Professor Kroner. Her marriage to first husband, US diplomat Eugene Tuttle, ended in divorce after tours in Canada, Madagascar, and Grenada. Several years later, she married David W. Hunter, who was also a US diplomat.
They served in S. Korea, India, Ukraine, and Spain. Carla was a world traveler, with love of different cultures and meeting new people. She and her husband retired to Vero Beach, Fla in 2004 where she enjoyed home and garden and beach walks.
In 2016 they took a round the world by private jet trip, and in 2018 another to Asia. Carla was active and lively up to the last days of her life. All her close family predeceased her. Her wish was for her ashes to be scattered at sea, as she lived like the ocean, freely moving from shore to shore.
Please offer memorials to help the people of Ukraine in this hour of need and pray for world peace.
Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

Dear David, it is very hard to accept that my friend Carla passed away. I know her since 01.04.1965, when I started my job in Munich and it was a pleasure to work with her in one office. When we moved to South Africa in 1966, Carla came to visit us and then came back for another year to stay with us. We had a wonderful time, she loved the sea, swimming and making friends. After 10 years living in Cape Town we returned to Germany and Carla visited us in Mainz, that is the last time, we saw each other. From this time we corresponded via email until the end. I miss her a lot, Love Marion

The Memories I have of her are all fond memories — visiting your home in Vero Beach with
my son, Chris, the papaya that she gave us on my last visit with my colleague, Young Oh
and the day you went over to the Compound II to catch your bird on her call when you work
for FCS, Seoul.
Yes, we are all lucky to know her and be with her, share some moments with her.

David, Jean and I were sorry to hear about Carla’s passing. Yes, she is in a better place, but losing a loving wife and long-time companion is not easy. Carla was a lovely and gracious person whose hospitality came from the heart. You and Carla had so many wonderful experiences together and you will always have those memories. Her German roots resonate with us as that is where we met and married. Please accept our most sincere condolences and know that we are here for you.

We often remember the good times we have spent together, at your home and outside. Carla will always remain in our lives and hearts. We will keep her in mind in our daily prayers.
It has been very nice, the trip you have made together in life and the beautiful union that you have both had.
That has led you to have a full and happy life. These are the good times that last over time and accompany us forever.
May the Lord bless Carla, and guide you along the way.

Carla and Dave were one of the first people that we met when we moved to Vero Beach. They welcomed us warmly. Every year they hosted a Christmas Party in their lovely home and invited their neighbors. Dave was devoted to Carla and always attentive to her needs when she was ill. Both were very lucky to have each other. We will miss her.
