Charlie was called upon to manage the Hospital Data Center at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia. In 1969, he moved the family to Harrisonburg, Virginia to oversee the computer systems at James Madison University. Then, in 1976, he took a position with the Virginia State Department of Information Technology, providing consulting services to agencies and institutions of higher education. As part of the Planning and Policies Division, he was eventually made the Manager of Programs and Policies until his retirement in 1991.

Charlie and Connie moved to Vero Beach, FL in 2002, after their three children had made Florida their home.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Connie; his two daughters, Mary Richardson of Sarasota, FL and Bobbi (Brady) Johnson of Vero Beach; and his son, Andy (Vivian) Richardson of Kissimmee, FL. He also has three surviving sisters; Joann Richardson, Jeannie Farrar and Gail Thorgalsen, all remaining in his home state of Vermont.
