Gary Lee Payne, 68, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Entering the gates of heaven, Gary was met by his parents, Richard J. (Dick) Payne, Sr. and Dolores M. Payne; along with his brother Rick Payne, brother-in-law Martin Racey and niece Shauna Bump.

Gary was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend.

He is survived by his beloved wife Bonnie Payne of 35 years, his daughter Ashlee Payne, and stepson Alan Adamson, his grandchildren Mason Payne, Dylan Leveille, Alana Adamson and Brianna Adamson; his brother Richard J. (Kathryn) Payne; his sisters Sharon Bump, Lisa Racey, Mary (Roger) Prentice, Denise (Rod Garrett) Payne; along with aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.

After graduating from Gloversville High School, Gary joined the US Navy. He was one of the original crew members of the newly commissioned aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, CVN – 69 at the time, and was deployed worldwide serving his country.

Gary was employed as an Information Technology Director for many years until his retirement.

He was a very gifted and talented musician and lead vocalist; he played with a lot of local bands that he formed in the area and toured professionally throughout the US and Canada with recorded artists.

Gary cherished and loved his family, friends and his pets very much. He was a warm, funny, sharp-witted man with a great sense of humor and loved by all who know him.

He enjoyed traveling, going to the beach, hiking in the mountains, riding his bike, boating, cliff diving, scuba, snorkeling, photography, fishing and going on RVing camping adventures around the country. He had a passion for music and a keen eye for photography.

The legacy of Gary will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him. His love, wisdom, compassion, and unwavering spirit will be remembered and cherished by all.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Gary, sharing memories that highlight his remarkable journey at Hales Mills Country Club, 146 Steele Road, Johnstown on Saturday, May 10th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, a cause dear and close to Gary’s heart.

Rest in peace, our beloved Gary. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will live on in our hearts forever.
