Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.
Born in Excelsior, Minnesota in 1935, Gene Raymond Miles joined the Marine Corps to fight the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Minnesota, married, had four daughters, and eventually, seven grandchildren.
After several years the family settled in Michigan where he assumed his new position as Director of General Motor’s Warranty Division. He ultimately retired from the Corporation.
Known by his friends as Geno, he was an avid athlete, and actively participated in basketball, baseball, and golf leagues. Periodically he engaged in racket ball, wally ball and touch football pick-up games. He umpired evening softball leagues when he was not assisting as a volunteer basketball coach at Albion College in Albion, Michigan.
Gene and his wife, Lois, left Michigan for Vero Beach in 2011. He remained active in sports and attended many of the local basketball and football games. He couldn’t seem to get his fill of sports activity, a factor which his oncologist attributes to his ability to manage cancer for nearly 20 years.
Memorial services will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery operated by the Veterans Administration in Holly, Michigan in mid-August.
Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

Ed Caldwell - High School and Marine Corps buddies.

Geno and I became buddies after Geno and his Mom moved from Excelsior, MN to Duluth in 1950 and Geno went to Duluth Cathedral High School starting in the fall of 1950 and continuing through our graduation from High School in the spring of 1953. Geno played basketball and football at Cathedral during his time there. His Mom (whose name escapes my memory at this time) and my Mom Dora Caldwell became very close friends as did his older sister Mary Lou Miles, when his Mom directed the choir at St. Anthony’s church on 8th Street and 11th Ave East on the Duluth hillside where I went to grade school before going to Cathedral in the 9th grade. After meeting Geno in the fall of 1950, we became close friends and during high school took several trips together to his former home town of Excelsior. Geno and his family shared our family’s grief when my brother Jerry, also a Cathedral grad in 1950 left Duluth with B Company USMC Reserve on 8/25/50, sent to Korea, and was KIA at the Chosin Reservoir on 12/3/50. After graduation from HS, Geno and I, along with 3 other Cathedral grads all joined the Marine Corps in late January, 1954, and all traveled together by train for 3 days to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA for basic training for 3 months in the same platoon #121 selected as the “honor platoon” for all the graduates of boot camp during that 3 month session. I hope to be able to share my sorrow with Lois, and Geno’s children and family when he is buried in Michigan later this year. My wife Mary, for whom I have been a caregiver for going on 5 years, and I were able to visit Geno and Lois on our last trip to Florida in the spring of 2014.
