George Charles Gideon, Sailor US Navy, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 24, 2018 at the age of 91.

George was a plank-owner and was a member of the first crew of the destroyer USS ORLECK DD 886, when she was commissioned on September 15, 1945. The USS ORLECK went onto serve our country for 37 years and was decommissioned on October 15, 1982. She retired with 4 battle stars from Korea and 14 from Vietnam, making her the most decorated warship in American history since WWII. George was one of the men who made this ship the greatest one that ever sailed. He was very proud of his service. In the 2016 Destroyer USS ORLECK DD886 Association reunion in Boothbay Harbor, honored George by dedicating that reunion to him.

George worked on the Florida East Coast FEC Railroad, was a butcher for many years at A&P and for the last 30 years worked with his son John as a carpenter.

George had many interests over the years but his most loved interests were fishing and boating.

George built our house. Every year he would send us a card at the holiday time. Our returning card would say, “George, thank you for our House… love the Suminskis” He will be missed.

We are so sorry that George is no longer with us. We loved his company, joy of life, and easy going personality, going fishing with him and drinking a cool beer or two! We always admired his ability to “not sweat the small stuff”, a lesson we could all benefit from. He was one of the most sociable persons we have ever known, he loved company, good food and a good laugh. This Irish saying personifies George: “Here’s to a long life and a happy one; a quick death, and an easy one; a pretty girl, and an honest one; a cold beer — and another one.” He lives fondly in our memories until the day we see him again. With much love, Astrid & Patrick
