George Edward Cruikshank

George Edward Cruikshank of Sebastian, FL passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on September 26, 2019 at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida.

George was born in Leominster, MA, the son of Arnold and Louise Cruikshank. He had one sister – Ruth (Cruikshank) Norton, who predeceased him.

After finishing high school, George entered the U.S. Army where he trained war dogs for sentry, messenger and bomb detection missions. After World War II ended, he graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree and Columbia University with a master’s degree in journalism.

It was at Boston University where George met the love of his life, Genevieve Hunt. They were married in June, 1950 – the beginning of a marriage that lasted until Genevieve’s death in 2012. The couple was blessed with four children: Victoria, of Danbury, CT; Kirkland of Los Gatos, CA, Lisa of Washington, CT and Craig of Sebastian, FL, four grandchildren: Heide and Scott Cruikshank and Robert and William Hutchinson and two great-grandchildren: Theodore and Anderson Cruikshank.

George had a long and successful career as a journalist and editor including significant roles working for US News & World Report and Morgan Guaranty Trust Company. As the editor of the Morgan Guaranty Survey, George created and wrote the “Mouseville” series of economic fables. These articles were widely read and reprinted in other publications including the New York Times.

George was an avid sportsman. At Boston University, he earned his varsity letter as a member of the fencing team. Later, he enjoyed playing tennis and golf at Sea Oaks Tennis Club and Bent Pine Country Club in Vero Beach, FL and Lake Sunapee Country Club in New London, NH. Competing with friends for the “men’s-day” pot always brought out his competitive spirit and, when he was on the winning team, a happy smile.

In addition to sports, George loved the thrilling rides of the Midway. A favorite for many years was riding The Dipper during Hospital Days in New London with his grandchildren. Later, he fulfilled a life-long goal when he went sky diving in Florida to celebrate his 90th birthday.

Funeral services will be held in Lenox, MA and burial will be in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox.
