Gertrude was born on 4 November 1933 to Austin and Olive Owens (née Ryan), and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated with a nursing degree from Hunter College, New York, and in 1986 received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey. Gert met her beloved husband Francis Joseph (“Fritz”) Bradley in 1960 when he was a patient at the hospital where she worked. They married in 1961 and enjoyed sixty-one years together.
