Glenn Amos Wild died peacefully at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida, on January 3, 2013.
He was born in Ashland, Kentucky, on January 24th, 1929. He was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he was every bit “Steel City” tough.
Glenn was a gifted athlete during his schoolboy days and played tailback for the legendary Wallace Wade at Duke University in the late 1940’s. After a stint in the Army, he started his coaching career at Kiski Prep School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, before heading to Washington, D.C., where he coached football, basketball and baseball at St. Albans School during the 1960’s. Glenn would eventually take on the role of athletic director in addition to his coaching duties. During his time at St. Albans he was able to coach baseball at the sister school, Rikkio High School located outside Tokyo, Japan, for one season.
In 1969, Glenn movind his family to the beautiful town of Vero Beach, Florida. He continued coaching and teaching in Vero Beach until his retirement in 1989. A tireless competitor, Glenn stayed active on the tennis courts up into his mid 70’s. Those that knew Glenn, whether as an “old school” coach, witty teacher, devoted father, or loyal friend will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his children, Judge Joe Wild and wife, Glenda, of Vero Beach, Steven Wild of Sebastian, and Jodi Manning, and husband Al, of Deland, Florida, along with eight grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Rosewood Manor for the exceptional and tireless care they provided Glenn during his struggle with Alzheimer’s, and to the staff and volunteers at VNA Hospice House for giving Glenn several days of comfort and serenity with his family.
The family will receive friends at the Vero Beach Church of Christ, 3306 20th Street, Vero Beach, at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. A Memorial Service will follow at 4:00 PM, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Hospice House, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960, in memory of Glenn.
