H. Jerry Spruell, 83 of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly of Roanoke died on September 17, 2015.
He was born on February 25, 1932 in Bowden, Georgia to the late W. Hugh and Eva Holcombe Spruell.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Hulsey Spruell; his sister Justene Powell, brothers Hugh J Spruell and Michael Spruell.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Simmons Spruell, daughters Lisa and her husband Steven Sharkey, Julie and her husband William Jeffery and son Edward and his wife Suzanne. Also surviving are his stepchildren Terri and her husband Michael Mosley and Jon David Jackson, grandchildren Caroline Spruell, Jack Jeffery, Eva Jeffery, step grandchildren Chloe Jackson, Michaela Mosley and Jackson Mosley.
Jerry was a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Georgia and received his MSW degree from Atlanta University. He also served in the US Army during the Korean War.
Jerry worked as manager of the American Red Cross chapter and the Appalachian Red Cross Blood Center for 21 years and was division manager for parts of Virginia and West Virginia during his tenure. He also worked for the United Way of Roanoke during the annual campaign and was responsible for establishing the United Way Loaned Executive Program.
A memorial service will be held at the South Roanoke United Methodist Church on October 11 at 2:00 pm.
