After a long illness, Jeffrey K. Barton passed away on October 18, 2014, at age 71.

He was born in Monongahela, PA, moved to Palm Beach County in 1960 and to Indian River County in 1970.

A Florida State University graduate in Finance, Jeff worked in banking and corporate finance before joining the public sector. He served on the Vero Beach City Council and held the positions of Finance Director and Budget Director of Indian River County and Assistant Director of Utilities for the county before seeking the elected position of the Clerk of Circuit Court and County Comptroller. He served in this position from December 1988 until his retirement in June 2012.

Jeff was active in charitable organizations as a board member of the American Cancer Society and the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) and in business organizations, serving as Chair of Florida Association of Court Clerks Services and Operations Corporations and the Florida Local Government Investment Trust. Jeff was a Kiwanis member for twenty years and a Rotarian for the last six years.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn Barton; son, Andrew Barton of Vero Beach; daughter, Sheila Barton of Bethesda, MD; and sister, Cheryl Barton of West Palm Beach.

A Gathering, a Commemorative Service, and a Reception will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014, at the Vero Beach First United Methodist Church, 1750 20th St. The family will greet friends from 10 – 11:30 a.m., followed by the service at 11:30 a.m., with a reception to follow at 12:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Jeff requested donations to VNA Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 or Vero Beach Sunrise Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 6274, Vero Beach, FL 32961.

Jeff will be missed and remembered for his love and commitment to Indian River County, its citizens, the Clerk of Court employees, and to his church and family.
