John Mosse Brown Hastey of Vero Beach Fl., age 90, went to his eternal fishing spot on July 6, 2022. John was born June 4, 1932 in the Bronx, NY.
The youngest son of Paul and Beatrice Hastey, John lived in varied places, from NYC to Texas, before returning to Greenwich Village, NY for junior and senior high school. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in Military Intelligence. He then attended Utah State University where he met the love of his life, MariLyn. He earned both his Bachelors and Masters degrees and returned to New York, where he worked as a Research Scientist and contributed to several papers on sleep disorders. John and Lyn lived in the Village, Flushing, Queens and then settled in Staten Island for over 35 years., John joined New York City’s Human Resource Unit and remained there until he and Lyn retired to Vero Beach, Fl.
John and Lyn have three daughters. John was once asked if he was sorry that he only had daughters. He responded that he was hoping for puppies but they came close enough. Besides Lyn, John’s great love and affection were for his three daughters, dogs, fishing along with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife (Mari)Lyn, and their daughters Robin Hastey, Tammy Verderosa and Monica Hastey McMahon; Son-in-laws, Andrew Grodence and Scott McMahon; Grandchildren, Christopher VanDusky, Evan Balcombe, Erica VanDusky, Guy Verderosa, Stephen VanDusky, Camae Verderosa, James McMahon, Daniel Grodence-Hastey, Airyelle McMahon, Justin Grodence-Hastey and Brigid Grodence-Hastey; And spouses Jaci Balcombe, Krystal McMahon, Ceceila Verderosa, and Jen VanDusky, with a special note of extreme gratitude and love to Michael McDonald.
John’s great-grandchildren include Angel VanDusky, Hailey Cutright, Rylee VanDusky, Calli Balcombe, Brady Balcombe, Van Verderosa, Jeffrey Lawson, Braydon VanDusky, Ella McMahon, Adalyn Balcombe, Owen McMahon, Maverick McDonald, Donnie Suarez and Jackson VanDusky.
John was predeceased by his parents, Beatrice and Paul, sister Audrey, and his brothers Graham and Paul.
A gathering of family and friends to share remembrances will be held on Sunday, July 10th, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory; 1655 27th Street, Vero Beach, FL. 32960.
Memorial contributions may be made to Utah State University, Ducks Unlimited, or the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County.
