Kathryn Applegate O’Brien, age 81, of Vero Beach, was born March 29, 1940, and passed away on December 28, 2021.

Kathryn, better known as Kathy, Aunt Kathy, Great Aunt Kathy, and “Apples” was truly one of a kind.  She was a Florida Gator and a dedicated, lifelong Gator fan.  She was once an avid golfer and a hard worker.

There are so many great stories from her early years bartending at the local landmark, The Tahitian Lounge.  She ultimately retired from the Gould, Cooksey law firm where she diligently kept the books for decades.

Anyone who knew Kathy, knows how genuine, analytical, precise, witty, generous and loving she was.  Her nieces, nephews, great niece, great nephew and close friends meant everything to her, as did her fur babies, Biscuit, Bogey and Mulligan.

She is survived by her nephew, Gary R. Applegate, Jr. (Sarah); nieces, Tandy Applegate Brazie (Bruce) and Toni Applegate Kouns (Donnie); great nephews, Kevin L. Brazie, Kip R. Brazie, Keaton C. Brazie, Cory M. Kouns; great niece, Crystal Kouns Zeigler (Peyton); great-great niece, Emmy G. Zeigler and great-great nephew, Dawson A. Zeigler.

Kathryn was predeceased by her father, G. Russell Applegate; mother, Grace Toohey Applegate; brother, Gary R. Applegate, Sr.; nephew, Kyle L. Applegate; and great nephew, Chad M. Kouns.

Arrangements by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

I worked with Kathy for more than 25 years at Gould Cooksey Fennell. She was a meticulous “paper” bookkeeper and highly respected by the firm. She was the creator of our “lame duck” club and was a great practical joker! Will miss our lunches together and her loyal friendship. Rest in peace love.

Precious lady. Loyal and sweet friend. Kathy could be funny and the life of a party, or she could be your serious companion. We shared the love and hijinks of our cats. She doted on her boys. Work brought together a group of friends, she enriched all of us. I am grateful for Kathy, she was a blessing to me.

Kathy was my winter neighbour for 11 years. She had a great sense of humor and really loved my dog, Bella. Each morning for years she left Bella a treat in a Tupperware container on her doorstep. Bella got the treat as a reward for retrieving her newspaper which was sometimes poorly placed by the carrier.Bella still pulls towards her door as we pass. We will miss you, Kathy. Go Gators Go! Love, Mel, Judy Glustien and “Bella”

I knew Kathy for over 10 years as a neighbor at Pinecreek Condos. Soon after moving in we met, and she shared her love for the beautiful grove where we live. I think she was very happy to be here. She knew all the dogs In our small neighborhood, and would leave treats for them in a jar by her door. She will always be in my mind and heart.
