Lee W. Lake, of Vero Beach, died peacefully in her sleep the night of Thursday March 30th.
She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Vero Beach in 1983. Prior to moving here, she and her family had happily lived in many wonderful cities: Marseille and Paris, France; Douglas Manor and Locust Valley, Long Island; Chatham, Cape Cod; and Cincinnati (twice).
Mrs. Lake was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a BS degree in Fine Arts, where she had been a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After graduation, she married McCrea Benedict, who served in the 8th Air Force in World War II and was killed a year later while serving in England. During those war years, Mrs. Lake was an American Red Cross hospital worker in Taunton MA and Trenton NJ, helping soldiers returning from war. This experience began an interest in community service and volunteerism that she has been committed to her whole life.
After the war, Mrs. Lake moved back to Cincinnati and married Robert H. Lake, a young executive at Procter & Gamble and former naval officer during World War ll. Mrs. Lake continued to be involved in charitable endeavors, including with the Red Cross, as a co-founder of the Girls’ Club of Locust Valley, and as a leader with the Junior League in both Long Island and Cincinnati. After a life of volunteerism, she retired, becoming a fine painter, a happy bridge player, an avid reader and an active and loving grandmother to her four grandchildren. One of her great joys came from sharing her spiritual beliefs and love with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons and their families: Thomas G. Lake, his wife Karen, and grandchildren Katie and John; Stephen R. Lake, his wife Katharine, granddaughters Jessica and Stephanie, and great-grandchildren Dylan and Emma. She is also survived by her devoted niece Penny Lippe, “adopted sisters” Camilla Borg and Sharon Hayes Morgan, and her god-daughter Jennifer Hatfield.
Riverside Theatre always meant a lot to Lee Lake, and she was sure that memorial donations would be most welcomed at 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32963 or VNA Hospice of IRC, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
