Lelan B. Cable, Jr.

Lelan B. Cable, Jr., 87, of Vero Beach, Florida, formerly of Laytonsville, Maryland and Ft. Pierce, Florida, died August 24th, at his home.

He was born the 22th of October, 1926, in Torrington, Connecticut. Lelan was a graduate of Admiral Billard Academy, New London, Connecticut, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. He sailed on tankers and victory ships during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres.

Lelan was preceded in death by his wife Moira Darran Cable. They had 55 adventurous and loving years together before she passed.

After World War Two, Lelan finished his studies, and then worked as a ship�s officer. Next, he embarqued on his career as an engineer, specializing in submarine and systems engineering. He held a patent for flexible pipe couplings for submarines. He also test dove submarines. He retired from Tracor Applied Sciences as the Division Vice President with oversight of Systems Technology Operations.

While residing in Maryland, Lelan was active in the Lion�s Club, Montgomery County Agricultural Center, the Propeller Club of D.C., and the Capital Yacht Club. He was the President, of the 3-C Club of Montgomery County. Upon retirement he moved to Florida where he was a member of the Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach Yacht Clubs.

Survivors include four children, Sara McCarthy and husband, Daniel, of Germantown, Maryland; Melissa Sleeper and husband, Jonathan, of Vero Beach; Faith Fritz and husband, Roland, of Olney, Maryland; and Lelan B. Cable III of Maryland; and nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 PM, Saturday, September 6, 2014, in the chapel of Christ Church, Vero Beach and St. Bartholomew’s in Laytonsville, Maryland at 11:00am

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to V.N.A. Hospice, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida 32960.
