Mary Nowell Gendron, a cherished and long-time resident of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 23rd at the VNA Hospice House. She was 95.

Mary lived a full, joyful, and blessed life. Born in Shaw, Mississippi, she was one of 13 children in a devoted, first-generation Italian-American family. Her parents, Joe and Emma Cocilova, farmed cotton, and Mary grew up working alongside her siblings in the fields—experiences that instilled in her the values of hard work, family, and faith.

She met the love of her life, Bob Nowell, a fellow Mississippian, while living in San Antonio, Texas. Bob was serving in the U.S. Air Force, having previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps. They married, settled in Mobile, Alabama, and raised three children together. During those years, Bob and Mary founded Alabama Fence Company. Later, they relocated to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where they established Alco Fence Company, which remains a family-owned business to this day. Mary played an active role in its success. Tragically, Bob passed away at just 53 years old.

In her later years, Mary retired to Vero Beach, drawn by family ties, especially her sister Pat Blardinelli and her family. There, Mary eventually married Albert Gendron, a widower. For sixteen years, they enjoyed an active life in Grand Harbor—golfing and playing bridge—until Albert’s passing.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her three children: Bobbie Soltys Harrison (Peter), Ken Nowell (Betsy), and Vince Nowell (Suzie). Known affectionately as “Granny,” she is also survived by seven grandchildren: RJ Soltys (Jen), Eddie Soltys (Emma), Halie Brazier (Aaron), Jamie Nowell (Amy), Riley MacKay (Connor), Spencer Nowell, and Reagan Houghton (Charlie), and by seven great-grandchildren: Robby and Mellie Soltys; Soren and Lucie Brazier; Rory MacKay; and Linnie and Winston Soltys.

A woman of deep faith, Mary was a devoted Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach, where she attended daily mass for years. Known for her southern graciousness, lively spirit, and constant smile, Mary loved time with friends and family.

Mary will be profoundly missed, but always remembered for the kindness she showed, the joy she brought, and the love she gave.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church at a later date.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

Mom was the heart of our family — a source of quiet strength, unwavering love, and endless kindness. She was a strong woman in a sweet little package. Mom gave everything of herself, and her faith carried us all. Saying goodbye feels impossible, but her positive impact will live on in us. Thank you, Mom, for everything you lived for. Now, enjoy your eternal reward.

Mom thank you for many lessons in life you taught me. I’m most grateful for the discipline of housekeeping. I learned organizational skills, delicious cooking, efficiency and hospitality. These gifts have carried over into every area of my life. Thank you for your generous giving spirit. You have made us all givers❤️
