“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Stanley Johnson, age 69, on April 1, 2025, at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Ft. Pierce, FL.

Mike was born in Rockford, Illinois on December 3, 1955, and moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 1992.

Mike was a retired respiratory therapist, and for years owned and operated Michael’s Pressure Cleaning on the barrier island.

Always a farmer at heart, Mike was also the owner of Oyster Island Mushrooms and affectionately known as “Myco”. His passion for growing mushrooms and educating the public about the medicinal and nutritional qualities of mushrooms was well known. He attributed his vast knowledge to his apprenticeship with Terence McKenna and the teachings of Paul Stamets. Mike was well known in the Florida restaurant and farmer’s market circuit for providing fresh and quality mushrooms and was always fair and willing to share his knowledge.

Having studied and lived in both Nepal and India, Mike was always conscious of the breath, yoga, and meditation. These were his daily life practices and often shared with us his wisdom on inner peace.

Mike is survived by his wife Ginger Johnson; son Donraj Johnson and his girlfriend Ryley, whom he cherished; and daughter Julie Cupka.

He is also survived by numerous extended family members in Massachusetts and Illinois.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, Don and Fran Johnson, his beloved chocolate lab Miles, and his treasured orange tabby cat Stevie.

Please remember Mike fondly as “the mushroom man” and seek to spread kindness and compassion in his honor.

Services will be private.

In keeping with Mike’s wishes, ashes will be scattered at the New England Peace Pagoda in Leverett, Massachusetts and on the ocean shore in Summer Place, Florida.”

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.
