Robert Lee Gilbert, age 88, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2021 at VNA Hospice House of Vero Beach.
He was born May 30, 1932 in Imboden, Virginia to the late John F. Gilbert and Mossie Caudill Herron. He lived in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and Dayton, Ohio before moving to Vero Beach, Florida in 1959. He married the love of his life, Joann, in 1954 and was married for 62 years until her death in 2017.
Mr. Gilbert served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he earned the Distinguished Unit Citation and Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars. Upon his discharge from the service, he worked for several manufacturing plants including Frigidaire and General Motors. After coming to Florida in 1959, he worked construction, building houses in Indian River County. In 1963, he went to work at Piper Aircraft where he was a Machinist for 34 years. He eventually became the Machine Shop Supervisor until his retirement in 1997.
Robert loved the outdoors, specifically fishing and hunting. He could often be found at either the inlet or a riverbank, on the weekends.
He is survived by son, Robert L. (Jacqui) Gilbert, II; brothers, John (Helga) and Roy (Carol) Gilbert; grandson, Gregory (Megan) Gilbert; countless nieces and nephews and his special niece, Vicky Snoha.
He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Joann; sisters, Florence Bush, Peggy Christy, and Lucy Owens along with several nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Gilbert’s request, there will be no services held.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

I knew Rob for many years he was a great guy he loved to fish any time you saw him he had a smile on his face he will be missed rest in peace my friend.
