Let the family know you care by sharing this tribute.
Robert James Vatland, age 74, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic Indian River, just three days before his 75th birthday. He fought a courageous year-long battle with pulmonary fibrosis, demonstrating immense strength and resilience until the very end.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Karen Vatland; his sister, Irene Testa; his son, David Vatland (wife Erin Vatland); his daughter, Sarah Vatland (husband Sadiq Rendys); and five cherished grandchildren: Marissa Vatland, Matthew Vatland, Maddyn Vatland, Kaysan Rendys, and Zarina Rendys.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Diego Maldonado and Dr. Steve Ritter for their relentless support, care, and compassion. Their unwavering dedication over the past year gave Bob more time to spend with those he loved.
Bob had a deep passion for golf and was a proud member of Bent Pine Golf Club since 1983 and Quail Valley River Club since 2003. He also loved playing the piano, which brought him great joy. Along with these passions, Bob enjoyed boating and spending time in the Bahamas, especially with his family. This past summer, Bob and his family created cherished memories together in the Abacos, for which they are forever grateful.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Bob moved to Vero Beach, Florida, in 1972, where he built a successful career and made countless friendships along the way.
A driven businessman, Bob made history at the age of 25 as the youngest Oldsmobile dealer in the country. Over the years, he built the Vatland Automotive Group, acquiring Pontiac GMC and later Honda. More recently, he and his son David expanded the business to include Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, ensuring his legacy would continue for generations.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 11, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Bent Pine Golf Club, 6001 ClubHouse Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32967. Guests are invited to come and go as they wish, allowing friends and loved ones to pay their respects and honor Bob’s memory.
In lieu of flowers or food, the family suggests contributions to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (secure.qgiv.com/for/pulfibfou) or a charity of your choice in Bob’s honor.
Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

My deepest condolences to the Vatland Family. I’m grateful I had the chance to visit with Bob last Friday. As a former employee at the old Pontiac-Oldsmobile-GMC dealership Bob was always approachable and in for a good joke. His impressive smile was always made feel comfortable when in his company. When there was a service related issue with an upset customer and he had to get involved and, you were right, he would back you a 100% but at the same time making the customer think they won the battle. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

So sorry to hear about Bob’s passing. My husband David Decker worked for him for many years at Vatland Oldsmobile. I can remember when he would take an RV hoist it up with a crane and stay up there for day on end until the Dealership met their goal. He was a compassionate and caring person and I know he loved his family. Keeping your family in my prayers. Hold on to all the great memories you have of him.
