Thelma Marie Shields, 87, of Vero Beach, Florida, went home to be with the Lord on November 2nd, 2018 while under hospice care.
Thelma was born June 9, 1931 in Jacksontown, Ohio to parents, Orus Allen Helser and Marie White Helser.
Thelma grew up in Ohio, where she married Thomas E. Shields, who predeceased her in 2009. Thelma and Tom raised their family in Ohio, prior to retiring and residing at The Moorings, in Vero Beach. They were also blessed to have a second home in Lake Lure, NC.
Thelma was involved in many charitable organizations; touching the lives of others and improving the community brought her great joy. Thelma lived a very full and active life. Her laugh was contagious, and she loved to make others laugh.
Thelma’s church was always very near and dear to her heart, a choir member for years at Fairfield Mountain Chapel in Lake Lure, she was also instrumental in starting the Ladies Circle at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach.
Thelma’s survivors include her son, Dr. Thomas (Shirley) Shields, II of Tallahassee, FL; her daughters, Susan (Charles) Aleshire of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Elizabeth Woods of Clinton, MS; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Sodders and Louise Ciavola; and brother, Carl Helser.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, November 10th, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, 520 Royal Palm Blvd., 32960.
