Wanda Lee Cato Asafaylo, born and raised in Vero Beach, passed away in the city of her birth on September 5, 2023. Wanda was born July 10, 1935, just a bit before the doctor arrived, and was welcomed into the world by several aunts in attendance. Her loving parents were Ivey and Madie Lee Cato. She was joined by big sister, Janice, and sometime later gained two more sisters, Marilyn and susan.
Wanda attended all twelve years in the Vero Beach School system, graduating in 1954. “Tots”, her family nickname, was a true-blue Vero Beach Fighting Indian, immersed in all the activities of the school, including Glee Club and National Honor Society. Always Courteous and outgoing, she garnered many friends, and was blessed with many fun cousins. It was during this time of her life that she was committed her life to Christ and was very active in the church life of First Covenant Church in Vero.
In 1955, Wanda married Michael Asafaylo. They had four children: Steven, Robin, Paul, and Amy. True to form, she was always involved with her children’s school and church activities.
In her adult life, she worked in the insurance industry and served as a “Girl Friday” in several other offices. Wherever she went, she always made, and kept friends.
Wanda suffered a stroke in 2014, beginning a long slow decline. However, the Assisted Living Facilities where she lived during that time, all loved her because she was so kind and courteous.
Wanda was predeceased by her parents, Ivey and Madie Lee Cato and her son, Paul. She is survived by her son, Steve (Sandy) daughter Robin DeSantis (Edward) and daughter Amy Prez, and sisters, Janice Johnson, Marilyn Anderson, and Susan Humanes (Otis), seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, 1655 27th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
