Barbara “Bunny” Frey died peacefully on January 6, 2021 at her home in Vero Beach, FL, in the company of dear family and friends who gathered to celebrate her remarkable life of service, spirit and love.

Born October 6, 1941, Bunny first learned the value of commitment to service from her father, David Hendrick, the mayor of Coral Gables. After she graduated from the University of Miami in 1963, where she was a member of Tri Delta, she dedicated her life to a celebration of humanitarianism, a love of people from every background and nationality, charity for the needy, and the exploration of the better angels of our nature.

Bunny taught public school in New York and Miami, served in the Peace Corps in Peru, volunteered at each of the churches where she faithfully worshiped, ran youth groups, taught Sunday school, raised funds as PTA president, led a Girl Scout troop… day in and day out… and yet never failed to have time for her daughter Melissa or her beloved husband Bill Frey.

As she pursued a life of assistance to others, Bunny became a crucial financial sponsor and board member of El Hogar de Amor Y Esperanza, an orphanage and school in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Bunny was a shining light to all who knew her. Her laugh would brighten every room, and her intellect would elevate every conversation. There was no problem she couldn’t confront and no plan she couldn’t bring together. Whether she was birdwatching in South Africa or the Galapagos, playing competitive bridge, sharing her spiritual insight in book clubs and church groups, or just experiencing the pure joy of a life well-led, Bunny did everything with her entire heart.

And she made everyone around her better for it.

She will be deeply missed, but her example will be forever followed by all who were lucky enough to love her, and fortunate enough to be loved by her.

She is predeceased by her husband Bill Frey and mother Mildred Hendrick, and is survived by her brother David Hendrick, her daughter Melissa Frey Mazin, her grandchildren Jack and Jessica Mazin, her cousin Kris Crosby, and so many others whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined due to current COVID restrictions on large gatherings. As a woman of both religion and science, this is exactly how she would want it.

Memorial contributions may be made to The ALS Association (als.org/donate) or to El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza (El Hogar Ministries, Inc., 29 Cummings Park, Suite 404, Woburn, MA 01801).

Arrangements by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

An amazing woman. She would enter St Augustine Church with bracelets tinkling. She once told me someone at church had admonished her for her noisy bracelets. I told her she was making a joyful noise. That’s pretty much what Bunny always did. Our birthdays were a day apart, we always greeted each other. I was blessed to know her

Ms. Bunny was an AMAZING WOMAN! I was her caregiver for about 4 months. When I met her it was joy at first sight! She loved my different hairstyles and colorful tops I wore to work. As I would leave she always smiled and said Thank you. I never wanted to leave her because her joy even in her situation she made it look easy. I want to extend my deepest condolences to her daughter and brother. Bunny will be GREATLY MISSED forever in my oh by the way she loved to dress and kept her hair done! What a remarkable Woman.

To say that Bunny a magnetic personality would be a understatement. Even after her diagnosis, and into her wheelchair, she attracted a crowd. You’d go into the Parish Hall and she would be surrounded by friends hanging on every word. If you couldn’t see her, you would know when you heard that iconic laugh. She was a role model on how to handle a terminal disease and looked at her situation as another of life’s adventures. She said she’d had a good life and she certainly had! We were blessed to have known her.
