David Carl Steffen, 81, was taken into the arms of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023. David, the son of the late Carl M. Steffen and Ann (Heyen) Steffen was born July 12, 1941 in Chicago, IL. He had many happy boyhood memories and enjoyed Illinois’ rural life with his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

David’s family moved to Dania, FL in the mid 1950’s. After high School , David attended the University of Florida for three years, then attended and graduated from Florida State, with his BA teaching Degree, in 1963. After teaching at a private school in Amacaskin N.J., David moved to Granite City, IL in 1966.

He taught at Washington Elementary School for two years. While in Granite City, David met his wife Sharon. They married on June 8, 1968, and moved to Dania, FL.

David Continued teaching, for 30 years, in the Broward Co. School system, retiring in June 1998. David and Sharon were blessed with a beautiful life and family. They enjoyed their 54 years of marriage living in South Florida, Homosassa, FL and finally, Vero Beach, FL.

David always enjoyed and respected nature. He loved backpacking in the Smokey Mountains. He loved working in his yard and enjoyed the quiet solitude of sitting on the back porch.

David was kind, honest, decent, and hard working. He loved Jesus, most of all, David loved and adored his family. He loved being “Yaya” to his grandkids. Our family will miss him more than the words can describe. Our family is thankful that David is now at Peace.

He is survived and missed by his wife, Sharon, his children Erich Steffen, Gretchen (David) Dawson, and Kirsten (Clark) Piper. His grandchildren, Luke and Kayla Dawson, and Clark David and Kelsea Piper, sisters-in-law, Janice Stallings and Pamela Wieser and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

We meet many people in life, but on rare occasion we meet someone who is uniquely different from most. That would be my brother-in-law, David. He loved my sister like most women dream of being loved. He loved his family like a man should love his family. He was smart, funny, kind, and could always laugh at himself. I feel privileged to have known him and wish he could have stayed with us longer. Our loss is heaven’s gain because he’s already had years of practice of being an angel. RIP David.
