Dominick Sclafani of Vero Beach Florida passed away on Tuesday July 14, 2020 at the age of 90.

He was born in the Bronx New York the baby of eight by Italian immigrants from Bolognetta, Sicily.

He was raised on Arthur Avenue where his love for food began, not only eating it , but creating delicious dishes.

He enlisted in the Army in March 1951 during the Korean War. On April 24, 1955 he married the love of his life, Alice Nutter which resulted in three children , Donna (Rick), Dennis (Barbara), Dina (Jim), five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

In 1985 he moved to Vero Beach Florida to live with his daughter Dina and future son in law Jim who rapidly became not only a son, but his best friend.

Dominick pleased many people in several states with his outstanding dishes, in Vero Beach it was The Taste of Italy, Giordano’s Italian Deli where Tom Selleck and his wife became somewhat addicted to Dads Italian Tuna sub to creating the Dominick (Italian sub) named after him at Kelleys Irish Pub. In addition to cooking he had an immense love for gardening where it was not uncommon to find him in his yard from sunrise to sunset basking in the beauty of his flowers, trees and fruits so well cared for.

Dominick was also known for his beautiful display of Christmas villages the he spent weeks getting things just perfect for so many to see, but his priority was always first and foremost his family and friends, he never asked them for anything immersed with their presence was all he ever wanted.

For all of those who were blessed with the opportunity to know Dominick our amazing Dad please feel free to leave a word that reminds you of him and how you met.

This world truly needs more like Dominick Sclafani, he will be forever missed with much sorrow, but always remembered for all of his great qualities.

I was so sorry to hear about Dominick. Although I never met him, I always enjoyed talking to him on the phone. He was always cheerful, and we talked as if we were old friends. Our drivers were always pleased when one of their assignments was to take him to an appointment. I am so very sorry for your loss, but so happy that you had so many years with this wonderful man. And so glad that he lived long and well. You are right, Dina, that he gave you a huge gift. My heart goes out to you. April Hargett, Volunteer Ambulance Squad.

It is with deepest sympathy that I offer my condolences to you all. I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Sclafani and take care of his eyes here in Vero Beach. He was always pleasant and had a smile on his face. It always made my day better when I saw his name on the patent list and would look forward to the next time I would see him again. I am very sorry for your loss and wish all of you the best of memories of him. Sarah Khodadadeh, MD

God bless you Uncle Dom. I’ll never forget your help in putting together our family history . That’s when I truly got to know you . I did not realize that you like Christmas villages too, as do I. I think gardening must be in our blood also… I am sure you are with my father now, catching up.
