Ellen “Dee” Oveida Summerall Nettles passed away Thursday morning. The world has lost its North Star and one of its most selfless humans. She was a constant source of unwavering love and support for her family. She loved her family unconditionally and protected them fearlessly. She was a successful woman and had a work ethic that was unmatched when she was healthy. She was a best friend to many and a mother to two of the most fortunate boys this world has known.

Dee survived cancer three times over the past 18 years, the first time being pancreatic. She was the definition of perseverance. She had a way of making the world a safer place and she was beautiful inside and out. This world might continue to spin madly on without her, but I assure you that it does not spin with the same energy.

Dee is survived by two children, Robert Eugene (38) and Jon Douglas (45) along with a daughter in law that she claimed as her own, Lillian Marie (38). These children expanded their family by nine more: Joseph, Logan, Sofia, Jon, Joe, Mia, Timothy, Lyle, and Lawson.

Dee is also survived by her mother, Doris, her sister, Becky, her two brothers, Aaron and Philip, along with her lifelong best friend and cousin, Sheila. Dee was also married twice and loved them both deeply. Gary Nettles and Jon Moore were the people they were supposed to be at the time they were supposed to be, and she had great relationships with both until the day she left this world.

A Gathering of friends and family will be held 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

This isn’t goodbye Momma; it is until we see you again. Our memories will have to do, our memories alone will get us through. Just thinking of the times when it was you and me, & me and you, against the world.

Love you always, -The Kids

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.
