Eugene Charles Melchiori, called his final play on November 13, 2016 in Vero Beach, Florida. Gene was born May 16, 1928 in Stambaugh Michigan and married Jo Broslavick on April 7, 1951. Together they raised four children, Tomye (Ron Daly), Steve (Holly), Chuck (Janice) and Rick (Nancy). Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Andrew (Jennifer) Daly, Kate (Jeromie) Ortiz, Nick (Britney) Melchiori, Matt (Kala) Melchiori, Whitney (Chris) Vishey, Bryce Melchiori, Chris Melchiori and four great grandchildren, Shane, Vivian, Roan and Julian. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Emma (Dallatorre) Melchiori, two sisters and two brothers.

Gene graduated from Stambaugh High School, attended Western Michigan University before completing his undergrad degree at Northern Michigan University. He then served his country during the Korean conflict before beginning his teaching career in Norway. Gene received his master’s degree in counseling at Michigan State University and became a Spartan for life. His entire professional career was spent at Norway High School as a teacher, coach, athletic director and counselor touching the lives of countless students.

He had several highlights during his tenure as a coach and educator including leading the 1971 Knights to an undefeated season, being named U.P. Coach of the Year and later being inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame. His 1984 golf team won the Upper Peninsula Golf Championship. However, most importantly, he encouraged many students to go on to higher education and pursue their dreams. The many students who called him Coach and returned to visit and reminisce were very special to him.

Gene loved the Packers, Spartans, golfing, hunting camp, playing softball and listening to the family tell stories about their adventures and escapades around the dinner table. He showed kindness and compassion to everyone he met.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to VNA Hospice of Vero Beach, Florida.

There will be a service held 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 19, 2016 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 7550 26th St, Vero Beach, FL 32966.
