Evelyn Ann Thomas, 97, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2022 at her home of 32 years in Vero Beach, Florida.

She was born August 1, 1924 in Woodbridge, New Jersey to Robert and Irma Gutwein, where she spent her early years, later graduating from Woodbridge High School.

Evelyn worked for Merck and Company for 11 years before she and her husband Frank moved to Ocean Township (Wayside), NJ, and, in 1953, opened the first CARVEL ice cream store at the Jersey Shore.  They both retired in 1970 and moved to Blairstown, NJ, then to Bushkill, PA, while spending winters in Florida.

In 1990, she made Vero Beach her permanent home, and attended St. Helen Catholic Church and was active in the Grove Isle community where she lived.

Survivors include her son, Robert Thomas, and his wife, Lata.  She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, G. Frank Thomas; sister, Roberta Larsen; and brother, Richard Gutwein.

Evelyn’s kindness, sincerity, and generosity will be sadly missed by all those who knew her.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

I was caregiver to Evelyn for 4 yrs and I looked on her as a friend who will be sadly missed. We could always find something to laugh about. So very sorry to Robert and Lata on your sad loss, on a wonderful Mother and Mother-in-Law who loved you both very much. With deepest sympathy from Tricia.

I was very sorry to hear of Ev’s passing. I met Ev and Frank Thomas when I began my very first job at Carvel back in the 1960’s (when I was in High School) on West Park Ave, Oakhurst, NJ. I also worked for them when they moved the store directly onto Hwy #35 in Oakhurst. I loved working for them and my heart goes out to the family. My Dad, Chet Ebie and sister Phyllis Ebie also worked for them. Robert I only knew as a little baby whom they used to bring to the store. My thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of Ev’s family. May God bless you all. Cheryl (Ebie) Metz .
