Helene Joan Hess, age 88, passed away peacefully with her children and husband in attendance on Sept. 1, 2018 at the VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach, Florida.
Beloved wife of Alfred J. Hess for sixty-four years and devoted mother of Kathy Kearns, Joseph Hess, Thomas Hess, Alfred Hess, William Hess, Mary Bowen, Nguyet Nguyen, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Originally from New York, born in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Helen Draude. Helene “Joan” graduated from Freeport L.I. high school and The New York Secretarial School. After raising a family, she was employed on Long Island by Internal Revenue Service and the Town of Islip.
She was an avid daily crossword devotee and enjoyed golf, tennis, travel and playing bridge and other card games with her family.
She volunteered many years at the Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce and assisted her husband doing Meals on Wheels in Indian River County.
A memorial mass of Christian burial and interment will take place on Nov. 3, 2018 at 9:45 AM at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Bohemia, L.I., N.Y.
A celebration of life event will take place at her residence in Florida in the near future.
