James “Jim” E. Northrup, 71, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away suddenly at home on June 9, 2022. He was born February 20,1951 in Syracuse, New York, the oldest child of the late Clarence and Dorothy Northrup. After earning Eagle Scout rank, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology, then received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from SUNY Plattsburgh.  Jim met his wife Sharon in Syracuse in 1979.  In 1982 they married and moved to Vero Beach.

He worked at the Press Journal for 21 years in advertising sales. From there he started his own small business offering custom home repairs and remodeling.

In his youth Jim loved to cross-country ski and worked as a professional ski instructor. He was a teacher by nature and a good listener. Often referred to as “Mr. Fix It”, he was a master craftsman who took just as much time and care in his efforts for others as he would for himself.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon; son, Ben Northrup of Bloomfield Hills, MI; daughter, Julie (Rob) Helvestine of Larkspur, CA; sister, Laurie (Brian) Fallon of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandchildren, Wesley and Alec Helvestine; nieces and nephews, Luke, Victoria and Chris.  He was predeceased by his brother, Doug (Susie) Northrup of Concord, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Vero Beach.

A gathering with family and friends will be held from 2:00-3:00 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following at 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 20, 2022, at Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, 1655 27th Street, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
