James Malcolm (Jimmy) Hayslett, 77, passed away on January 17, 2025, at his home in Vero Beach, Florida, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Jimmy was born in Covington, Virginia. He also lived in Roanoke, Virginia, and Harrisburg, North Carolina, before relocating to Florida in 2021, which was his lifelong dream.
Jimmy was an E6 in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1996 from the U.S. Navy Reserve with 24 years of credited service. He also retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company as a District Manager after 34 years. Jimmy enjoyed sports, especially football and NASCAR racing. He loved listening to country music. Throughout his days, he was a “people person” who never met a stranger. Jimmy was known as an excellent story-teller who loved making others laugh and smile.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathy Hayslett; his daughter, Kim Gajan, and her husband, Ray, of Waxhaw, NC; his son, James David Hayslett, and his wife, Angela, of Staunton, VA; and his four grandchildren, RJ, Audrey, Annabelle, and James Logan. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Monty and Sharon Hayslett, of Covington, VA.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and “Skip” Hayslett, as well as his brother, Frank Hayslett.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date in Virginia.
