Mary M. (nee Benson) Gorman, age 83, of Vero Beach, Fla., formerly of Dorchester, Needham, Cotuit and Wellesley, Mass., died peacefully on August 27, after a lengthy illness.

Born to Joseph R. and Mary A. Benson in Dorchester, MA, Mary attended Stonehill College in Easton, MA. It was at Stonehill College, on the first day of class freshman year, that Mary met Jack Gorman, whom she married on May 9, 1959 at St. Gregory’s Church in Dorchester.

Upon graduation, Mary began her career as an English teacher at Sharon High School. In later years, she worked at Hyde Park High School, Boston Latin Academy, and Ursuline Academy.

Mary enjoyed her friends, her association with the Holy Cross Women’s Guild, and time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She always looked forward to Stonehill get-togethers.  Mary and Jack remained devoted supporters of Stonehill College throughout their lives.

Mary and your father, Jack, were friends of my parents, Angeles and Tom Davis. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. When we lost our son several years ago, she was very supportive. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Gorman truly changed my life by showing interest in me at GLS in the early 70s and directing me to Stonehill. I loved her as a teacher and valued her as a mentor. She was one of a kind!

Mary Jo and family, We were so worry to hear of Mary’s passing. She and Jack were such great friends from meeting when we all lived in England and after we moved to Florida and would have dinners together and attending productions at Riverside Theatre. Mary was a very special lady and will be missed by everyone that knew her.

Mrs. Gorman was out teacher at Girls’ Latin/Boston Latin Academy. Condolences to Mary Jo, grandchildren, and siblings. I remember Mary Jo sometimes coming to GLS when her school was closed for a holy day. Your mother had high standards, and we were the beneficiaries.

John Bradley - A classmate from Stonehill.

Sympathies to the family. Mary was a very Strong, intellectual and really nice person and I enjoyed getting to know her and Jack. Our time together was memorable and I’m glad to have been in her life for the short time that I was. Jack and Mary are now in God’s hands, together as they were in life.

I heard about Mrs. Gorman’s passing while listening to the Stonehill Memorial Mass this morning. Mrs. Gorman and I sought eachother out at every Stonehill reunion as our graduations fell in the same five year cycle. She actually took me to Stonehill when I had her for English at Hyde Park HS. She was attending an alumni meeting and she took me and another girl along to spend time at Boland Hall, then the girls’ dorm, while waiting for her. She loved Stonehill and wanted us to see how great it was to be there. She was a great English teacher and friend. I have always remembered her kindness, her superior teaching skill and the fact that she brought me to Stonehill from which I graduated. I also remember she always talked about her beloved daughter, Mary Jo, whom she adored. I’m so sorry to hear this news. May she rest in peace. Sincerely, Kathy Finn DiTrapano ’73
