Mary Lindsay was born in Thetford, Norfolk, close to the North Sea on the east coast of England, the eldest of a large and loving family. She passed away peacefully in the early hours of April 2, 2021 at the wonderful age of 96, living at her daughter’s home in Orchid, Florida, close to the Atlantic Ocean. She had a deep affinity for the ocean all her life and, in recent years, loved walking the boardwalk in Vero Beach with her dear caregiver Janie and sitting beside the ocean with her friend Armand.

Deeply loved and loving mother to her daughters and their husbands, Diana and Paul, and Janet and Dermot. Beloved Granny/Gran to Emma and Gord, Clare and Lenke, Craig and Alina, and Tony and Dayna. Special Gran Mary to Denise and Chris, Paul and Cate, and Sarah and Alan.

Adored Gran/Gan-Gan to her great-grandchildren: Hayden, Jamie, Desi and Sawyer; Natalie and Dominic; Callum, Emily, Anna and Erin; Gemma and Sophie; and her eagerly anticipated great granddaughter expected in August.

Mary was warmhearted and beautiful. She was creative, kind, thoughtful, and charmingand witty to the end. She genuinely loved people and delighted in making them smile. A lifelong learner of new skills, she took up golf at 65, tackled duplicate bridge at 79, and delighted in using her first iPad at 86. She was an excellent cook, and British to the core: she loved the Queen, tea and porridge, and Marmite on hot buttered toast. Her grandchildren’s friends adored her; she was Gran to many. Her visits to family in various cities (and countries) into her late eighties and early nineties were great fun and the hottest ticket in town.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Victor Anthony (Tony) Ruby in 1984 and her second husband, Robert (Bob) Lindsay in 2014 and her dear friend, Armand Mueller on April 1, 2020. She is survived by her sister Yvonne, and brothers Michael, David, Geoffrey, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers John, Kenneth, Peter, Anthony (Tony) and Arthur, and sister Doris.

Mary was much loved by Janie Walton, her wonderful caregiver and friend for the last seven years, and Debra who helped care for her in the last months. She cherished close friendships with her golfing partners at Spring Lake Ladies Golf Association where she was Past President; her bridge buddies and friends in Sebring and Vero Beach FL; and Pastor George Miller and her many friends at Emmanuel United Church in Sebring, FL.

The family would like to thank Janie, whose devotion and tender care they will never forget, and VNA Hospice of Vero Beach, especially Nurse Donna, Chaplain Richard, and Music Therapist Nilsa for their compassion and many kindnesses.

Following cremation the family plans to celebrate Mary’s long and rich life at a future date when they can gather together. Her ashes will be scattered in the ocean according to her wishes so they can “go with the flow” and travel in the waves, swirls and eddies, across time zones and forever as she watches from above with the angels.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home, Vero Beach, Florida.

Janet and Dermot – I am so sorry to hear the news of your mother. She was such a lovely person, and you are so lucky to have been able to spend the many years with her. I remember as if it were yesterday the conversation we had about her love of her animals, so it is fitting to see her picture with her dear furry friends. 96 years is a wonderful run, but for those who remain, it is never enough. I am so happy she came into my life. Rick Brand
