Patricia Andrews Ashby, 92, passed away peacefully at her home of over 50 years in Vero Beach on Sunday, February 26, 2023.  She was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on July 29, 1930 and was preceded in death by her parents James Alvan and Barbara Tompkins Andrews as well as her brother James Montgomery Andrews, who was an acclaimed jazz pianist.  Musical talent in her family has roots as far back as her great grandfather, Frederick Schilling, who was a famous composer of church hymns. Known to friends and family as Patty, she had a deep appreciation for many forms of music and enjoyed playing the piano throughout her life.

Prior to attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority as well as active participant in theater, Patty worked in the bond department of J.P Morgan in New York City.  She often recounted stories of escorting VIP’s such as General McArthur and Eddie Rickenbacker. Following Chapel Hill, Patty moved to Vero Beach with former spouse, Dr. John L. Ashby, Jr. Together they had three children: Kimberly Ann Ashby, John Scott Ashby (Sue), and Julie Andrews Ashby Citrin (Ben). Patty is also survived by two nephews, Phillip and Stephen Andrews, and nine grandchildren: Chad (Mindy) Ashby, Brooke Ashby, Will (Tori) Ashby, Reid (Emily) Ashby, Andrew Yale Citrin, Harrison Scott Citrin, John Bradley Citrin, Benjamin Taylor Citrin, and James Clayton Helms; and nine great grandchildren: Caedmon, Griffin, Fletcher, Teddy, Caroline, Davis, Peter, Warner, and Amelia Ashby.

Patty was a devout Christian and member of Trinity Episcopal Church. She loved working with children and was a devoted volunteer for organizations such as Youth Guidance, Special Equestrians, Hibiscus Children’s Center, and Youth Sailing. In her later years, Patty joined the Vero Beach Power Squadron where she developed many friendships and was able to apply her passion for boating. Her greatest talent was in floral designing for weddings as well as a multitude of charity fundraiser events.  Patty was a long time member of the Vero Beach Garden Club and cherished many forms of horticulture throughout her life. She was also an avid tennis player and welcomed players from around the world to stay with her family while in town for pro-circuit tournaments.  Her natural affability forged relationships in many different areas and she never knew a stranger. A prolific reader, Patty had a thirst for knowledge and educated herself on a variety of topics including local news, politics, poetry, and medical textbooks even in her last days. In her lifetime, she also earned a CMA certification, real estate license, and advanced sailing credits. Patty lived life with passion, perseverance, and a loyal faith in the Lord.  Her greatest joy was the love she shared with her family and offering help and guidance to those in need.

A memorial service celebrating Patty’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Church on Saturday, May 6th, 2023 at 2:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to one of her many beloved charities.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

To Julie, and all the family. What a beautiful obituary. Patty was a great floral designer and I’ll forever remember our days at Rose Circle of the Garden Club of IRC and also Floral Design & Etc.. She was dedicated to what ever fund raiser or club she was involved with! She always gave 110% of herself! Riverside Childrens Theatre was also one of those events she loved participating in. Even though she was not active in what ever club she was once active in she found ways of staying in touch. She will always be remembered!
