Shirley Kline Wittpenn, 82, of Vero Beach, FL and Peapack, NJ died February 7 at home, from complications due to dementia.

Shirley graduated from Connecticut College, married her high school sweetheart Jack in 1951 and raised her four children in her home town of Glen Ridge, NJ.

She was a quintessential volunteer, becoming President of the Newark Junior League (now Montclair-Newark), President of the North Jersey Connecticut College Alumni Club, and a Newark Museum Volunteer. With her good friend Terry Webster, Shirley started a Girl Scout troop in Newark and the Glen Ridge Drug Awareness Committee.

In 1983 she moved with her husband to Peapack, NJ where she continued volunteering, becoming President of the Friends of Matheny School and also a Literacy Volunteer. She received great joy and satisfaction from all her volunteer work including teaching the 52 year old neighborhood handyman how to read.

In addition to cooking and playing tennis and golf, she loved to be with her family and to travel. With her husband she has visited all seven continents.

She is survived by her husband Jack, four children and seven grandchildren: Dr. Ann Wittpenn, Charlotte, VT; Bob, Susan, Maggie and Sarah Wittpenn, Tewksbury, NJ; Susan, Dan, Katie and Emily Ott, Medfield, MA; John, Denise, Jack, Jimmy and Joseph Wittpenn, Mt Sinai, NY.

Inurnment will be in the Garden of Memory at Glen Ridge Congregational Church at a later date. A celebration of her life will be held at her home on February 16th, at 4pm.
