Steve Hansen, long-time resident of Vero Beach, passed away peacefully on April 14th at Indian River Hospital.

Steven George Hansen was born on October 3, 1953 in Geneva, New York. He was the first of five children born to George Vernon and Constance Sue Hansen.

Steve spent his early years in Idaho until 1964, when his dad was elected to Congress. The family moved to Arlington, Virginia.

Steve graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1971.

He moved to Fort Pierce in the late 70’s and spent most of his adult life in the Vero Beach area.

Steve held many jobs over the years, including many working in the local school district printing office.

He is survived by his wife Kim; and his four younger siblings- Jim, Pat (Rielly), Bill (Kasi), and Joanne- all residing in Virginia. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Steve very much.

Steve was as sweet and gentle soul as any the Lord has made.

Steve was a gifted artist. He enjoyed teaching Tai-Chi for many years. Steve’s passion was always music, and he loved to play bass guitar. He played in bands that toured the country.  It was his greatest love. His favorite song, since being a young teenager, was always Jug Band Music by the Lovin Spoonful. It is one song he would always love to sing before audiences.

Nothing would tickle Steve more than if all who loved him would take a minute, play the song, turn it up loud, and sing along.

The family is planning on having a Celebration of Life for Steve, which will be scheduled at a later date.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

I was a classmate of Steve’s in high school and was fortunate to visit him in Vero Beach and hear his band play. He was a kind and gentle guy, and I loved him. My heart goes out to his family. He will be missed. ~Miriam Gordon (ne Nash)

You are correct when you say a gentle soul. I met Steve when he played in the band with Fred Bogart at Frankie and Johnnie’s many moons ago. He always had such peace in his eyes and loved his smile. I’m sorry for his family and loved one’s who know him best. But he lingers on in the rest, who think the best of Steve.

Sad to see of your passing, Steve. You were a gentle and sweet soul. I remember your battle with Crohn’s disease and was just thinking about you. I loved sharing photos with you of your beloved Idaho and the Snake River, as we traveled through the area. Keep shining your beautiful light down here. ⭐️ RIP buddy – play on

What a terrific human being. Steve was a gentle man and a very dear friend-in every sense of the word. He will be deeply missed by many, like me, who admired and respected him. Music was a passion and he loved to share his talents! I felt inspired by his music-his wisdom. Steve brought JOY to all who knew/liked/loved him. My sincere condolences to his family. I knew Steve and his brother, Jim, from W-L. High School. God Bless the Hansen Family; especially during this sorrowful time. My healing thoughts/prayers are for you all. ✨

I was saddened to hear of the loss of Steve Hansen, a very fine, unique, and talented human being. He was one of the most empathetic people I’ve known. We were close friends and had many good times, such as hitchhiking trips in the 70s; and later kept in touch via FB. Steve was adventurous, loved nature and hiking, and always had a wistful note in his voice when mentioning the Tetons. He loved Idaho (the culture, not so much). Most of all, he loved playing bass, influenced by Washington bassist Keter Betts with his hard driving beat. Steve taught me to always listen to the rhythm section first, with me later realizing that if there isn’t a good one– it’s not a very good band
It was a blessing that Steve passed away peacefully at home, with family and pets, instead of an uncomfortable setting. My deepest sympathy to your family, extended family, many beloved friends. May your memories bring you comfort.

After a conversation with Steve, you always felt better. Whether it was about music, growing up, thi chi, rebuilding scraped guitars, or nothing at all it was always time well spent. Going back decades, I never heard a complaint or an unkind word about anyone. Truly a kind soul, and he’ll be missed.

Steve was adventurous, loved nature and hiking, and always had a wistful note in his voice when mentioning the Tetons. He loved Idaho (not so much, the culture). Most importantly, he was a master bassist, with a hard driving beat, influenced by Washington session man Keter Betts. Taught me about walking bass, always to listen to the rhythm section first, that not good band without one.
It was a blessing for Steve to pass away peacefully at home with loving family and pets instead of an uncomfortable setting. My deepest sympathy to your family, extended family, many beloved friends. MIght your memories bring you comfort.
